The OP is connecting using VNC. So he needs a desktop and at least
part of X. Even if you are connecting using ssh instead of VNC, you
will need the X libraries if you want to run X based programs and
have them displayed on the local machine. If you are running xvnc as
the X server on a headless machine, you don't need a video card.
