Specifically, /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc was not replaced, just renamed, such that the previously working KDM screen and background have been replaced by whatever defaults are compiled in. $ ls -ld /etc/kde/kdm/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 18 08:57 /etc/kde/kdm/ $ ls -lcr /etc/kde/kdm/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Feb 18 08:57 Xwilling -> ../../X11/xdm/Xwilling lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Feb 18 08:57 Xsetup -> ../../X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 207 Feb 18 08:57 Xsession lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Feb 18 08:57 Xservers -> ../../X11/xdm/Xservers lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Feb 18 08:57 Xresources -> ../../X11/xdm/Xresources lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Feb 18 08:57 Xaccess -> ../../X11/xdm/Xaccess -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1506 Feb 18 08:57 kdmrc.rpmsave -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 360 Feb 18 08:57 backgroundrc A separate but obviously related issue is that, after the update, I wind up in some window manager-less failsafe session (just a single xterm running) rather than the KDE session that I had. In addition, regardless of which "Session type" I select on the KDM screen, I get the same window manager-less failsafe session. I'm not sure that the update to kde-config or kde-config-kdm did this, but something happened during the update such that restarting X broke the desktop config that had worked fine for months.
