Is there some e-mail program to get e-mail from GMail, but without
keeping any message stored in the local hard disk?

Not quite. You can configure gmail to allow pop but keep and archive a copy as well. Then you can use your favorite mailer to download/read/reply and delete as you go. If you need to check or search something old you can still use gmail's web interface for that.

Or, if you have your own server somewhere you can use fetchmail to do the POP pickup and store the messages so you can access time via IMAP from your client.
