Hi,
I just bought a notebook with an ATI X1600 card and a 1680x1050 display.
This works fine with the fglrx driver (except AIGLX). I can also easily
switch resolutions with xrandr. However 4:3 resolutions such as 1024x768
are always stretched to fill the screen which is a little annoying since
such resolutions are required to drive external displays such as
projectors.
Is there a way to keep the pixels square and not stretch?

When I recover from suspend instead of hibernate on my Dell laptop
(ati x1400), the screen becomes 1024*768 instead of it's normal
1050*1400. It's not strecthed, rather each pixel is one pixel. I must
reset the machine to get my 1050*1400 resolution back. Point is: it
can be done.
