I'd contact upstream, e.g. mxhaard. Depending on your model the v4l
controls may not be in place. Or the applications you use only support
v4l2 and not v4l1. The current drivers are only for v4l1 and mxhaard
is working on a v4l2 version, so if it's the latter you will either
have to wait until mxhaard releases the v4l2 driver or perhaps he will
make you his guinea pig for testing his upcoming code.

In any case the real answer will be given by upstream :)
