$ ls -la /etc/grub.conf

2006 /etc/grub.conf -> ../boot/grub/grub.conf

In other words, /etc/grub.conf is just a symbolic link
to /boot/grub/grub.conf. You can edit either one and things will work. For
consistency reasons, you should get in the habit of always using
the /etc/grub.conf link - that's where almost all documentation asks you to
make modifications.
