I cant print at all using gthumb; just text junk
the gimp will print a respectable page, but it takes about an hour

Use the hplip drivers (yum install hplip). Avoid postscript drivers; they are extremely slow.

Also gThumb 2.9.1, available in rawhide, has a new print system (gtkprint vs libgnomeprint). It is somewhat faster and easier to use.
