rsync is ok for me but I also want the backup disk to be able to replace the internal disk when I boot from usb.

I rsync to a usb disk for my primary backups. Of particular
use is the --backup-dir option I can use it to keep
older copies of files in backup directories separate from
the main rsync mirror. That way I can find the copy of the
file from a few days ago as well as the most recent version.
