The only workaround I have at the moment for 2.6.18 kernels, and for the 2.6.17 kernels, since I booted from a 2.6.18 kernel is to use acpi=force. btw. The 2.6.17 kernels were shutting down completely before booting from a 2.6.18 one. The 2.6.18 kernels are putting the hex on the 2.6.17 ones somehow, but have no idea where. Nigel.
