Well, I might guess, because the usual 3.5 mm jacks are crappy, in
general, and really crappy on some cards.  I was sorely tempted to
solder some normal sockets on fly leads to one of my computers.

Although the Dolby Digital Live and DTS connect function does not work, everything else should per their FAQ.
