(I had the same problems with SBLive! + 5.1 Creative speakers in Windows NT back when I was a Windows user - so this is not a Linux problem per say.) If you plan on using surround sound in OpenA games (E.g: Q3/4,D3, UTxx), you'll have to create an .openal file in your home directory.
