You'll have to tweak the alsa mixer quite a bit to get the sound level (PCM front/left/right/center/surround/etc) - I'm still struggling. (I had the same problems with SBLive! + 5.1 Creative speakers in Windows NT back when I was a Windows user - so this is not a Linux problem per say.) If you plan on using surround sound in OpenA games (E.g: Q3/4,D3, UTxx), you'll have to create an .openal file in your home directory.
