as to a mysql update...

1st, backup your data
2nd, backup your data!!

3rd... assuming you're using rpms/yum, do a yum update 'mysql'.. it'll
prompt you for any dependencies it might need...

if you go the route or using the mysql rpms, you might run into dependency
hell.. i've found it better to use yum..
