There is no separate SMP kernel in FC6.

It sounds as if the system is coming up, yes?  What does "uname -a" show as
well as "cat /proc/cpuinfo".

Yes...the boot process is detecting the existence of the drive.

I don't know if your DVD issue is part of this, but this bug has been
reported in multiple bugzilla entries.

What is the output of "lsmod"?  Also, "cdrecord -scanbus".
