Thanks Rahul. I submitted bug 218544
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=218544).

In the meantime, I went to http://atrpms.net/dist/fc6/alsa-driver and
downloaded alsa-driver-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.x86_64.rpm and
alsa-kmdl-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.x86_64.rpm. I used rpm
-Uhv to install them and then rebooted. Problems fixed.

Based on my searching through google a lot of people seem to be having
problems with the Intel ICH7 sound system - especially with respect to
headphones. Most of them seem to be resolved by using these new
drivers.

File a request for a update in http://bugzilla.redhat.com against ALSA
