One the system I had, the nvidia driver would load ok, just without direct rendering and 3D. This problem was solved by reinstalling the driver. Back to your problem: What files do you have in /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc ? On my system, I have 286 files there. Does disabling SELinux make any difference?
