just don't look right.  they refer to needing the RPMs kernel-debuginfo
and kernel-debuginfo-common, which don't appear to exist for a stock
x86 system.

  am i misreading this?  can someone clarify the actual steps involved?

You need to enable the appropriate debug repository in /etc/yum.repos.d.
