OK first off, thanks for the suggestions.

Akemi, my desktop does mount remote windows share, via an autofs map.
Howver my latopt does not, and when I think about it I've never even
noticed the hang on the desktop occur when the windows shares were
in use (they're not mounted very often). It's an interesting idea
and one I'll monitor, but I don't think it's what I'm experiencing.

Phil, your points about acpi are well taken. I have done some seraches
on acpi and yes there do seem to be some serious issues in this area.
I've done as you said, but also set "acpi=off nocapi" on my kernel
boot command, and stopped the scpid service on both machines. So
at the moment I'm pretty sure that acpi can't actually doing anything
on either system. We'll see what happens next.

One more question to the group at large - does the irqbalance service
need to be run on a *single* processor system ? From the descriptions
I have read this service should not do anything on a single processor
system, and I had disabled it on both of the two troublesome machines.
I'm wondering if that was not such a good idea ...
