At long last I managed to convince the radeon driver to use my mode line, and running at 58Hz instead of 61Hz seems to vastly improve my flickering problems. Full story at: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8790 My brief diversion over to the fglrx drivers only produced even worse bugs: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=37 I'll have to try using it for a more extensive period of time, but things that always triggered the flickering before only do it occasionally now, and the screen stays stable most of the time, so I'm hoping that the fun time I had digging through the X server source code, backtracking from each error, deducing what magic gibberish in xorg.conf would convince it to skip that check, then getting the next error and doing ti again and again will pay off. Documentation? We don't need no steenkin documentation, we got source code :-). And now, the "config free" FC6 xorg.conf file is my largest and most elaborate one ever!
