Had the same problem. Stopping T-Bird and restarting it solved the problem.

Hm I have been seeing this today, after the Thunderbird security update.

It seems it will not create a second reply window if the first is still unsent. In addition it spawned an empty window set to 10x10 pixels or somesuch in the top left at one point, but has not crashed FWIW.
