This probably isn't the answer, but I once had a creative sound card that needed a little adjustment - I had to open alsamixer, scroll all the way to the right (onto a new "page"), and unmute those channels. The channels weren't labeled correctly in alsamixer either - I don't have the card anymore, and I don't remember the model...
