I'm out of my depth, here, Paul. Part of the makefile reads

MODULE_INSTALLDIR = /lib/modules/$(KERNEL_VERSION)/kernel/drivers/usb/media/
MODULE_INSTALLDIR2
= /lib/modules/$(KERNEL_VERSION)/kernel/drivers/media/video/

default:
        $(MAKE) -C $(KERNELDIR) SUBDIRS=$(PWD) CC=$(CC) modules

install:
        mkdir -p $(MODULE_INSTALLDIR)
        rm -f $(MODULE_INSTALLDIR)spca5xx.ko
        rm -f $(MODULE_INSTALLDIR2)gspca.ko
        install -c -m 0644 gspca.ko $(MODULE_INSTALLDIR)
        /sbin/depmod -ae

Should I edit the MODULE_INSTALLDIR to match the MODULE_INSTALLDIR2? I would
have thought that they wouldn't have defined two separate ones if they could
both go in the same one.

Are you doing the "make install" step as root? While I don't think
that the "make" needs root privileges, creating a directory in the
$(MODULE_INSTALLDIR) and putting anything in it would. It looks as
though the makefile is just removing the obsolete spca5xx.ko and the
old gspca.ko from previous installations and putting in the new one
after making sure there is a directory for it.

Just a thought since I tend to bump my head on that one often.

/Mike
