Have I missed something? Is there any hope at all for my data?
    Try to run:
fdisk -l /dev/hdc
...to list the parittion on that hard drive. Maybe you have created a partition there and your data resides on that partition, and you would have to mount /dev/hdc1 or /dev/hdc2 instead...

Yes, you were indeed correct. There is a partition, and I have subsequently tried all the superblocks on that partition (hdc2):

[root@moe ~]# fdisk -l /dev/hdc

Disk /dev/hdc: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1   *           1          13      104391   83  Linux
/dev/hdc2              14        9729    78043770   8e  Linux LVM

Still no luck though.

Linux LVM will never mount as an ordinary ext3 partition.

This might help:

Thanks Calin & Andy. I will check out the links!
