While I don't know anything about DVI, I'd think that if the monitor/cable/video card were working right that you SHOULD see such text. Given that you don't, you may find it helpful. to back off and do some experimentation/troubleshooting on the connection. E.G., do both the computer and monitor have standard 15-pin VGA connectors? If so you may wish to try them to see if you get text at startup. You may wish to try a different DVI cable, or a different display with both analog and DVI cables.
