Today Charlie McVeigh did spake thusly:
My wife is thinking about biting the bullet and switching from a film
Canon Rebel EOS to the new Digital XTi.
I have a couple of questions since we are running FC5 on the primary
computer that we would use to snag and edit the pictures:
i) Will the XTi be happy and communicate with FC5?
Yep, it mounts itself as mass storage and you can use f-spot to import
the pics directly into the gallery
ii) What are the options for Linux software that will work with the
camera?
It just mounts as a drive under linux IIRC. So anything really.
iii) Any ideas on what limitations that I will run into using Linux vs.
Windoze?
The included Canon software won't work :P
iv) I know that my wife will need to learn to use Gimp but would there
be any advantage to installing VMware and using the supplied Canon
utilities (please I hope not!)?
Depends. The canon utilities included are:
a f-spot a like catalogue thing called ZoomBrowser EX, which is no biggy,
f-spot's nicer anyways
A utility to stitch photos together (not sure if there's a linux
equivalent)
A utility to control the camera from the PC (not sure if there's a linux
equivalent) which lets you take photos direct from the PC via USB - handy
for self portraits, but not hugely useful...
Software that lets you do time lapse photography (don't think there's a
linux equivalent)
I am happy to do the research myself but I not quite sure where to
start. Thanks in advance to anyone who has some experience with digital
photography - you could take what I know about the subject and it
wouldn't fill a thimble!
No probs. I don't know a huge amount, but I have a canon digital SLR and
use it under both linux and windows with few issues...
