I should have said that I have read the winbindd man page - didn't understand 
much of it - and get the impression that this is entirely about NT domain 
controllers.  If so, it is irrelevant, as this is a peer-to-peer mixed lan.  
No domain is set up, and an FC4 box is generaly treated as a file and print 
server.  Otherwise we are talking only shared data directories.
