Thanks, that worked. Didn't have the editor installed, see that there
are other good things in it.

If you run the gconf-editor
(Applications|System Tools|Configuration Editor)
and navigate to /apps/nautilus/desktop,
you can uncheck the default items you don't
want visible on your desktop.
