Well, what you want is  a secure server on a DMZ with unrestricted
access from your internal LAN and authenticated access for WAN clients.
You can achieved this  both with Windows (sort of) or Linux, Linux IS
better, no doubt, but you will need to probably change tactics and
secure that Win machine ; you also need a public IP.
We do this all the time...
