A quick Google suggests that's "BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT VERTICAL". No, you *don't* type it directly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode#Input_methods suggests ... hold down Ctrl and Shift and enter the hexadecimal Unicode value, preceded by the letter U if using GNOME 2.15 or later. Note: if your e-mail client is not UTF-8-aware (or there's *very* buggy software between the list and you) then you won't see that symbol properly.
