Check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.  Look for the section on the mouse and
see what the Option "Protocol" line reads.

Mine is set to

    Option         "Protocol" "IMPS/2"

and my cordless mouse works fine.  I've found that other settings will
result in the behavior I think you're describing.
