Hello,
I have an external DVD writer (Samsung SE-S164) connected via USB to my
machine running FC5 ( 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5).
The system messages tell me that the writer is being detected:
kernel: usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 3
kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
kernel: scsi2 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

kernel: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 62x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda
tray
kernel: sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5
and I get these devices created in my /dev:
crw------- 1 root root 21, 0 Sep 18 16:53 sg0
brw------- 1 red disk 11, 0 Sep 18 16:53 scd0

However, I am not able to see this writer in Gnome. If I put a blank DVD
in the writer, I do not get a window pop up asking if I want to burn a
DVD and neither do I get an icon ("Blank DVD") on my desktop. I do get
an icon if I put a blank CDROM in my internal CD writer. Any idea how to
get the external writer working in a similar fashion?
I have hal (0.5.7.1), udev (084), dbus (0.61), and I belong to a single
group (of my username red).
thanks,
->HS
