check your monitor's specifications as to how much resolution is allowed "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" put the highest resolution that your monitor supports. In case that you have exceeded your monitors specifications, CTRL ALT BACKSPACE to get out of X environment and/or reboot press a to grub before booting and put a 3 to enter into level 3 and edit your xorg.conf file.
