Make sure that you have Sun's java and tool chain in your path before the GNU Java and tool chain.
Thanks for your help but it seems that locating the right executable is not the problem. Running eclipse from the command line seems to shed some light on the problem: $ export PATH=/opt/jdk1.5.0_08/bin:$PATH; eclipse LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXt.so [libXt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXext.so [libXext.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] # # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00002aaab6bd23c4, pid=3613, tid=47368165920288 # # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (1.5.0_08-b03 mixed mode) # Problematic frame: # C [libgkplugin.so+0x2b3c4] # # An error report file with more information is saved as hs_err_pid3613.log # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit: # http://java.sun.com/webapps/bugreport/crash.jsp # I don't understand why it says libXt.so and libXext.so are missing since I have both installed (32bit & 64bit flavors).
