Is there such a thing as a "debug" kernel?

You can get the "vanilla" kernel sources from http://www.kernel.org .
On de-tarring this, you say"make xconfig"
and you are offered a million options,
some of which give greater debug output.
This creates a file .config, and then you say
"make", "make modules_install", "make install".

Your distribution probably supplies a model config file to start from.

It probably goes without saying, but if you're running X and want to see kernel debug messages on the fly, launch 'xterm -C'. That'll open a console window on your desktop.
