Thanks for your answer!!!

In looking at the posts in the spamassassin user's group as well as this
list there seemed to be a problem with the upgrade to 3.1.3 on FC4 by
way of glibc.  I decided to try a cpan upgrade to 3.1.4 (before I took
the plunge to upgrade to Fc5) and it is working perfectly.
