Just a suggestion - you might look at a couple of the Knoppix distros out there and see how they accomplish detecting the correct X config... I've only tinkered with a couple of them - clusterknoppix, and one called dyne-bolic or something like that. Both seemed to do a fair job of bringing X up "automagically". HTH, Chris
