If you are taking a class then just go with the flow. That is, use Microsoft Visual Studio if it is installed on the class computers. Visual Studio Express is free. If you need more features many schools offer students Visual Studio Professional at a very attractive price. No sense in putting yourself at a disadvantage. Most beginning classes and textbooks stick to the fundamentals so you are not likely to run into compliance issues.
