Nigel:

I have used the following for testing Java:
     http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

I also found that Java scripts were failing because my router was blocking 
them.  I think it was the filter "Popup Windows" that blocked the Java script 
functions.  Firefox does a good job of that so I shut off that filter.
