You are right. This code works. Thanks for the help.
But the upload still not work, and there is no error message in the logs.
So what might be the problem?

This is a free image hosting script. The page is not english. Select an image, and press "feltoltes" button to start upload.
After the upload it"s try to create a thumbial of the image using GD.
This is the full source code of the script:
http://mega-feltoltes.tx.hu/basic.zip

Hum something is broken with the script somewhere, it does not produce an <img> tag in the HTML in order to show the image, and the HTML is in fact incomplete like the script dropped dead in the middle. I would really expect something about it in /var/log/httpd/error_log

Hm does the apache user have write permissions in the directory this is being served from?

Seems this script touches a lot of things outside of gd that can be making the trouble. Why don't you make a quick php page using this example

<?php

header("Content-type: image/png");
$string = $_GET['text'];
$im    = imagecreatefrompng("images/button1.png");
$orange = imagecolorallocate($im, 220, 210, 60);
$px    = (imagesx($im) - 7.5 * strlen($string)) / 2;
imagestring($im, 3, $px, 9, $string, $orange);
imagepng($im);
imagedestroy($im);

?>

taken from

http://www.php.net/gd

and see if even that works? Than you know your problem comes from file saving, the upload action, selinux, etc.
