Just looked at my system logs, and found a bunch of these:

Aug  5 08:58:26 tehogee gconfd (root-19559): Failed to get lock for daemon, 
exiting: Failed to get a lock: couldn't create directory 
`/tmp/gconfd-root/lock': Permission denied
