the problem is solved.
The cache.log said:

"2006/08/02 09:11:04| Performing DNS Tests...
FATAL: ipcache_init: DNS name lookup tests failed.
Squid Cache (Version 2.5.STABLE9): Terminated abnormally"

then i started squid with -D option and after restarted squid the cache.log said

"2006/08/02 09:35:00| WARNING: ntlmauthenticator #1 (FD 6) exited
2006/08/02 09:35:00| WARNING: ntlmauthenticator #2 (FD 7) exited
2006/08/02 09:35:00| WARNING: ntlmauthenticator #3 (FD 8) exited
2006/08/02 09:35:00| Too few ntlmauthenticator processes are running
FATAL: The ntlmauthenticator helpers are crashing too rapidly, need help!
Squid Cache (Version 2.5.STABLE9): Terminated abnormally."

So the problem is something on ntlm_auth and i don't know how to solve. I will search.

I have removed the squid.pid file and commented the ntlm_auth row in the squid.conf file and so
squid is started in the rigth way.

And I get this answer from Henrik Nordstrom <henrik@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>:

RedHat init script stupidities.

remove /var/lock/subsys/squid, or start Squid manually not using the
init script.

  /usr/sbin/squid

Tanks for help
Regards

Plese help!
I'm usig FC4 and Squid 2.5STABLE9. I can't start squid. The squid.out say: "no running Copy".
If I do "ps aux | grep squid" I don't find any squid pid.
The GUI say: "squid inactive but pid file exist"
If I remove the pid file the GUI sai: "squid inactive but subsys locked"
Them if I restart squid from the GUI I get only one pid file and I think there should be two.
It appens when I was tring a configuration with some errors usig ntlm_auth.
It appens again and I don't know what to do. The first time I reinstalled all linux box.
thanks
Antonello
