It looked like mdraid - something to do with one > of those embedded bios SATA drivers. Yep - it is the Intel RAID controller on the P4C800-E motherboard. I tried fiddling with the initrd image some, removing "dm" commands from the init script and wot-not, but all that did was make the kernel panic, so I clearly don't know enough to do that right :-).
