You can do this quickly from the command line too:
# /sbin/chkconfig haldaemon off

I was trying to check whether HAL was interfering and causing the
problem with reading a DVD media, which was discussed in another
thread. It is now certain that HAL was not interfering and I will turn
it on again. Thanks for all help!
