I had that problem on FC5. There are 2 packages I installed using synaptic. compat-libstdc++-296 compat-libstdc++-33 I don't know which was responsible for adding the .so.5 version, but now have in /usr/lib quite a few earlier versions of libstdc++ Nigel.
