I am running

php-5.0.4-10.5
mysql-4.1.20-1.FC4.1
mysql-devel-4.1.20-1.FC4.1
mysql-server-4.1.20-1.FC4.1

So i do not get why the mysqli extension is not working...
You installed everything through RPM or yum?

Yes. This system is updated through yum all the time.

Here are the relevant to phpMyAdmin packages:

php-devel-5.0.4-10.5
php-mbstring-5.0.4-10.5
php-5.0.4-10.5
php-mysql-5.0.4-10.5
mysql-server-4.1.20-1.FC4.1
mysql-devel-4.1.20-1.FC4.1
mysql-4.1.20-1.FC4.1

Any ideas? This is an x86_64 system.

Hey, i am running an AMD Sempron 3400+ system, but i can't imagine that is the problem.
What does phpinfo(); tell you about what mysql extension you are using?
