Tried a few things, and found that the following worked:
# time yes 1|fdupes --recursive --size --delete\ /shared>dupes.deleted.txt

{took 6 hours to scan and keep the first item of each the 240G of data}
...
End result:
Set 164648 of 164648. 164 thousand sets of dupes, with average say 3
dupes. Before 6G avail, after 63G avail :-)
