You should be able to use ifdown ath0 then ifup ath0. If that doesn't
work, try playing around with the iwconfig command line.  Sometimes, my
dlink drops to 11Mbps and  have to use

/sbin/iwconfig ath0 rate auto

to get it to go to a faster rate.

man iwconfig
