That command works fine here, on an smp kernel, FWIW.

Using yum, I see that the module is in the FC kernels since 2111.  It
should be here:

/lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2122_FC5/kernel/drivers/char/n_hdlc.ko

Do you not have that?
