FC5 X won't start with Rage128's r128 driver, but will start using the vesa
driver

Hi folks. Yet another problem. I have FC1,2, and 3 on this Gateway 500
machine, using P111 (katmai) , and 256MB RAM. Graphics card is Rage 128,
using the r128 driver. FC5 refuses to start X using the r128 driver, and I
had to change xorg.conf to use the vesa driver. I'm mainly interested in
getting FC5 to play DVD's. FC1, and 2 on this machine, using Mpayer play them
ok, admittadly using the tarball install of Mpayer. On FC5 the tarball
install of Mplayer would not compile, a GCC version problem I think. The rpm
from the Greysector repo installed, but I am getting 100% CPU, and the
playback is juddery, and sound comes in bursts. Someone on the Ogle list
suggested that this is a problem with the vesa driver.

Anyone any suggestions as to how to get the r128 driver to work on FC5?

I had terrible problems even getting FC4 to install, on the other machine
using a Cyberbladei1 card using the Trident driver. I had to change this to
vesa to get X to start, but after doing the updates I was able to change the
graphics card driver back to Trident, and all worked ok. No such success with
FC5 though.

I cannot understand how there are no problems with graphics cards with FC1,2,
and 3, but starting with FC4 there are all these problems.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Nigel. aka mekon.

The graphics work ok on FC5 using the vesa driver, but I should be able to use
the r128 driver for the Rage 128 PCI graphics card, which works just fine for
FC1,2, and 3. r128 driver broken?

In anticipation. Nigel.
