RPM updates include the removal of old versions of packages.
RPM installs do not include the removal of old versions of packages.
yum uses RPM updates for most packages, and RPM installs for kernel
packages. However, in FC5 onwards there is a yum plugin, enabled by
default, which removes some old kernels such that you have either two or
three remaining kernels (depending on how old the kernel you are
currently running is - it will not remove the running kernel).
The RPM update procedure can sometimes fail due to errors in
post-install etc. scripts. The result of this can be that old packages
are left on the system even after an upgrade, but this is relatively rare.
