Here's the cut/paste from mplayer:

OK, further test point, xine plays my .mpgs just fine.  Its mplayer
which has the problem.  xine also plays my .mp3 files just fine, while
mplayer chokes on them.  So, I think I've narrowed it down to my mplayer
configuration for mp3s....

Install the livna repo, and install gstreamer-plugins-ugly, that should get mp3 (and a few other nonfree codecs) decoding for mplayer. I'm assuming you installed xine from either livna or another third-party repo, it naturally had mp3 support already.
